Castelo St. Jorge
Cathedral de Se
Santa Justa Elevator
Convento do Carmo
Christo Rei
Praca de Touros
Alfama
Torre de Belem
Jeronimos Monastery |
Lisbon is full of places of historical and or architectural interest. Take a trip on a tram through the famous Alfama area to the castle overlooking the city. Visit the Cathedral on the way back down to the Baixa shopping area, not forgetting the Praca do Comercio at the river end (especially worth a trip at Christmas). As with many European cities there is rather too much to see to fit it all in to one small paragraph. |
| Nightlife |
Chiado/Bairro Alto
Docas
Clubs |
For the younger person, Lisbon has a vibrant night scene. The Chiado area is packed with bars, and the Docas area by the river is also popular. There are a number of large nightclubs, but be prepared to come home with rather lighter pockets! |
| Museums/Attractions |
Science Museum
Aquarium
Water Museum
Electricity Musem
Parque das Nacoes
Zoo |
Lisbon has a large number of museums, but most of them rather lack inspiration. It wasn't till the city played host to Expo 98 that the city modernised a bit in this area. This led to the creation of the Parque das Nacoes on the east side of the city. Here the Science Museum and the Aquarium are well worth a visit. There is also bowling, a large shopping centre, cinemas, a cable car, and a large concert arena. |
| Shopping |
Baixa/Chiado
Columbo
Vasco da Gama
El Corte Ingles
|
Lisbon is full of shops. If you know where to look you can buy just about anything. Unfortunately not many people know where to look. In the mainstream however, it is very good for clothes shopping. The shops range from fashionable and cheap to fashionable and expensive! The main shopping area is the Baixa, and neigbouring Chiado. There is a small shopping centre here called the Armazens de Chiado. Around this area, large chain stores can be found (such as Zara, H&M, SportZone, FNAC etc) as well as many smaller indepents. For those who like large shopping centres, they don't come much larger than Columbo. For everything in one building, there is the El Corte Ingles department store. |
| Events and shows |
Pavilao Atlantico
Coliseu
Football
Theatres
FIL
Centro Cultural de Belem |
Lisbon has several concert venues. For the biggest shows there is the Pavilao Atlantico in the Parque das Nacoes. Slightly smaller there is the Coliseum in the centre of town. This summer (2006) sees Lisbon once again play host to one of Europes biggest festvials, Rock in Rio Lisboa. There are a couple of theatres that host mainly Portuguese, but some international shows. The Feira International de Lisboa is also on Parque das Nacoes and is a large exhibition space. The Centro Cultural de Belem holds a number of concerts and art exhibitions. For the football fans, Lisbon has 2 major teams, Sporting Lisboa and Benfica, both of whom have massive new stadiums after Portugal's recent hosting of the European cup. |
